Argentina

The Facts

  • Argentina is the second largest country located on the South American continent.
  • The official language spoken in Argentina is Spanish.
  • The first Europeans to settle Argentina arrived in 1502 during the voyage of Amerigo Vespucci.

Venezuela

The Facts

  • Venezuela is located in South America and is bordered by Colombia, Guyana and Brazil.
  • While Spanish is the official language of Venezuela, approximately 40 Indigenous languages are also spoken throughout.
  • Venezuela declared independence from Spain in 1811 and currently is a federal presidential republic with 23 states, a federal districts, and islands along the coast which are Federal Dependencies.

French Guiana

The Facts

  • Suriname is located in Northeastern South America between French Guiana and Guyana.
  • The primary and official language spoken in Suriname is Dutch.
  • Suriname was first settled by the British and later taken over by the Dutch. Independence was gained in 1975.

Japan

The Facts

  • Located in Eastern Asia, Japan is a chain of Islands bordering the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Japan.
  • The primary language in Japan is Japanese although additional dialects are also spoken.
  • The earliest historical writings referencing Japan are dated during the 1st century AD and the first established capital, Nara was founded in 710 AD.

Colombia:

The Facts

  • Colombia is located in the Northwest region of South America and the official language is Spanish.
  • Colombia is bordered by Brazil, The Caribbean Sea, Panama, the Pacific Ocean, Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela.
  • Santa Marta, the first Spanish settlement in Colombia, was founded in 1525 and the country gained independence from Spain in 1811.

Suriname

The Facts

  • Suriname is located in Northeastern South America between French Guiana and Guyana.
  • The primary and official language spoken in Suriname is Dutch.
  • Suriname was first settled by the British and later taken over by the Dutch. Independence was gained in 1975.

Taiwan

The Facts

  • Taiwan is located off the coast of East Asia and based on administrative power, is recognized as a province of China.
  • The official language spoken in Taiwan is Mandarin.
  • Dutch settlers colonized Taiwan in the 17th century and following this settlement, Taiwan was ruled at different times by the Dutch, Spain, Japan and China.

Ecuador

The Facts

  • Ecuador is located on the northwestern coast of South America and includes the Galapagos Island.
  • Spanish is the official language spoken in Ecuador.
  • The first city in Ecuador to gain independence from Spain was Guayaquil in 1820 and the remainder of Ecuador followed two years later.

Guyana

The Facts

  • Guyana is located on the North Coast of South America.
  • The two official languages spoken in Guyana are English and Creole.
  • Dense jungle regions and diverse wildlife species have lead to Guyana‘s creation of the Community-Owned Conservation Area, the largest of its type in the world.

Hong Kong

The Facts

  • Hong Kong is located in Eastern Asia.
  • Cantonese is a commonly spoken language in Hong Kong.
  • Hong Kong is widely influenced by various religions which include Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity and Islam.

Peru

The Facts

  • Peru is located on the western coast of South America.
  • The primary language spoken in Peru is Spanish.
  • Peru has a very diverse geography that includes dry coastal land, mountainous regions, and tropical rainforests.

India

The Facts

  • India is located in Southern Asia and is bordered by the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. Pakistan and Burma border the Northern region of the country.
  • India is home to one of the oldest civilizations in the world and gained independence as a nation in 1947. Prior to gaining independence, India was ruled by Great Britain.
  • The official language of India is Hindi with English as a secondary language. Over 1,500 additional dialects are also recognized among the Indian population.

Macau

The Facts

  • Located in Asia, Macau consists geographically of two Islands and a small peninsula.
  • A common language spoken in Macau is Cantonese.
  • Buddhism is one of the commonly practiced religions in Macau.

Bolivia

The Facts

  • Bolivia, located in South America, is one of only two landlocked countries on the entire continent.
  • There are over 30 official languages in Bolivia with Spanish being the most commonly spoken.
  • Before Europe colonized Bolivia, the region was included in the Inca Empire.

Thailand

The Facts

  • Thailand is located in Southern Asia.
  • The official language spoken in Thailand is Thai.
  • The name Thailand means "Land of the Free" and while other surrounding areas in Southern Asia were colonized by European powers, Thailand maintained its independence.

Philippines

The Facts

  • Located in Asia, Philippines is comprised of over 7,100 Islands in the Western Pacific Ocean.
  • The official languages in the Philippines are Filipino and English.
  • Fernando Magellan arrived in the Philippines in 1521 and the Islands were a colony of Spain for a period of approximately 300 years.

Chile

The Facts

  • Chile is located in western South America and with a coastline of 2,700 miles, it is considered to be the longest country in the world according to a length to width ratio.
  • While the official language of Chile is Spanish, Mapudungun is a native dialect that is also widely spoken.
  • Bordered on the east by Peru, Bolivia and Argentina, Chile also includes Cape Horn, the Southern tip of South America.

Cambodia

The Facts

  • The Kingdom of Cambodia is located in Asia in the Indo-China region.
  • The official language spoken in Cambodia is Khmer.
  • Tourism is a prominent source of Cambodia's economy with an estimated 2 million tourists visiting Cambodia on a yearly basis.

Vietnam

The Facts

  • Vietnam is located in along the coastline of Southeastern Asia.
  • The official language of Vietnam is Vietnamese.
  • Vietnam was a part of Imperial China until 938 AD.

Malaysia

The Facts

  • Malaysia is located in Asia in two distinct geographical areas, the Malaysia Peninsular on the west and the Island of Borneo on the east.
  • The official language spoken in Malaysia is Malay.
  • The geographical areas of Malaysia are separated by the South China Sea.

Indonesia

The Facts

  • Indonesia is located in Asia and geographically covers areas in the both the Indian and Pacific oceans.
  • While Indonesian is the predominant and official language, there over 700 additional languages are also recognized!
  • Of the 7,000 Indonesian islands, 4,000 of these islands are inhabited.

Uruguay

The Facts

  • Uruguay is located in South America between the countries of Argentina and Brazil.
  • Spanish is the official language of Uruguay and it is spoken by the majority of the population.
  • Uruguay was claimed by Argentina, Brazil and Spain and gained independence as a nation in 1828.

China

The Facts

  • China is located in Asia and geographically is the world's third largest nation.
  • The official language of China is Mandarin and over 500 other languages and dialects are also spoken.
  • With over 1.3 billion inhabitants, China is the most populous state in the world.

Paraguay

The Facts

  • Paraguay is located in the central region of South America.
  • There are two official languages in Paraguay: Spanish and Guarani.
  • The Guarani are an indigenous people group residing mainly in Paraguay with a high influence on the culture in Paraguay.

North Korea

The Facts

  • North Korea is located on the northern half of the Korean Peninsula in Eastern Asia.
  • The official language in North Korea is Korean.
  • Although often referred to as North Korea, the nation is officially known as The Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The government of Korea was established in 1948 with supervised elections held by the United Nations.

Brazil

The Facts

  • Brazil is located in South America and includes one half of the population and geographical surface of the continent of South America.
  • The official language spoken in Brazil is Portuguese.
  • Brazil was claimed by the Portuguese explorer Pedro Cabral in the 15th century and the country declared independence from Portugal in 1822.

South Korea

The Facts

  • South Korea is located on the southern half or the Korean Peninsula in Eastern Asia.
  • The official language in South Korea is Korean.
  • The South Korean government first established its independence as a nation in 1948.
